Like most gamers of my vintage, Fighting fantasy game books are an integral and somewhat nostalgic part of their early gaming adventures. So, when Jonathan Green ran his Kickstarter to write the definitive history, I joined in with my pennies. That was January 2013. It’s taken a far longer time than he anticipated to get things completed, but I was happy to see the final tome arrive yesterday.
I’ll do a proper review once I’ve had a chance to read it. For now, here’s a glimpse inside.
As you can see, it’s full of those nostalgic bits of art 🙂
If you fancy grabbing a copy before I tell you all its secrets, you can get it on Amazon.co.uk, or Amazon.com.
What was your favourite or most memorable? The Temple Of Terror sticks in my mind, even the cover gave me nightmares.
The books that played with the basic rules such as Freeway Fighter I remember I thoroughly, enjoyed the difference, that book may is maybe why I love the madmax films and but a lot of hot wheels cars to play Warlands.
I think my favourite was probably not a FF book at all, but one of the many that came along in their wake. It’s a historical one called On the Trail of Blood and is set in 1671 London when self-styled Colonel Blood tries to steal the crown jewels.
A large part of what attracted me is that Thomas Blood really did exist and really did try to steal the crown jewels in a truly bizarre tale. Wikipedia has some of the details: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_Blood#Theft_of_the_Crown_Jewels
Anyway, you’re dumped in the middle of all that 🙂
That does sound intriguing, I have to pick up a copy..
One of my funniest Horrible Histories sketches features Thomas Blood.
You might need to be British for this. Does not really ring a bell for me and I am getting up there in years.
Warlock if Firetop Mountain was the first an d most famous of the series. If you’ve heard of any of them it was probably that one.
Scorpion Swamp rules !
One of the best for me with “Chroniques Crétoises” and the Minotaur encounter ^^
I love the idea of this book, but it’s like 70 bucks on Amazon (US). This will not be a casual purchase.
On my screen it says that the hardback is cheaper ($45). As you say though, not an entirely casual purchase (though you could fake nonchalance and hope nobody notices).
🙂
and if that fails, I’ll try downright insouciance.
You devil, you!
