Dice are just tools, and all have their place. D6s are often the most appropriate to use for a number of reasons, not least of which are their familiarity, cheapness and the lack of mechanical necessity to go to anything else. This last one is the key in this case: the D6 simply did not allow me the range of options that the two extra sides of a D8 did whilst using the mechanics that I wanted to. I could have changed the mechanics and stuck with D6s – I just didn’t want to 😉
My initial draft used D10s, but further tinkering showed that this was actually slightly too many sides and it felt like a lose fit. D8s are the perfect size 😉
