Woke Up This Morning…

…with an idea for a Zombie card game in my head. It doesn’t scan well enough to be the opening line of a Blues song, but you know, I try.

That’s another project for the Someday/Maybe file. Actually looks like quite a good idea in principle. Most of the games I (literally) dream up are rubbish and make no more sense than the rest of my dreams. This, for once, actually works 🙂

Last night I met a dead girl in my neighbourhood,
Somethin’ tells me Im writin’ somethin gooood”

Its not blues, its pop, but it still needs some work.

    Wow, Zombies!
What a new and unspent theme for a game. Exciting. I wonder why no one else came up with this before…

Errm, okay, sorry Jake. I’m pretty sure you’ll come up with a cool game and good mechanics. But why not add a theme that hasn’t been used to death the last two years?

    • Quirkworthy says:

I know, I know. You’re right – it has been more than a little overdone. However, I still don’t think I’ve found one that elegantly captures the essence of what I’d want in a Zombie game. This might not either, but it’s a notion.

Of course, it’s unlikely to see the light of day for an age yet, so it’s more of a random thought than a suggestion that you should keep an evening free for a game any time soon 😉

Your comment also suggests a rather longer brain dump of thoughts on the subject of theme and mechanics. Another time, perhaps.

      • Ben says:

Unless the game is a blatantly commercial attempt to cash in on a popular trend and has no creative value behind it then whether the theme is “original” or not is neither here nor there. More to the point, if you’re going to create a game around a given theme then the best time to do it is when it’s popular and everyone is doing it, not when no-one cares about it.

One supposes that we should be grateful you didn’t start singing.

I think we are lacking in the more genuine roleplay area – something with hordes to get past / through with specific objectives, such as rescue someone trapped, get food / water / ammo, get to a safe house etc. And with an overal goal – such as getting to a “safe” quaratined area under military control etc. Almost like the Walking Dead in game form . . .

    • Craig says:

Actually – this might be better as a board game / tabletop game.

    • mattadlard says:

      Yeh, interesting thought…..

Am I allowed to recommed “Zombicide” here?

      • Quirkworthy says:

You’re free to recommend whatever you like. Can’t say I was desperately impressed by that though. It was OK, but lacked any sort of Wow factor for me. These days I have and have played so many games that something really needs to be doing something special or different for me to be very impressed.

      • McHolty says:

I would recommend Last Night On Earth before Zombicide.

I was never a fan of zombicide but I felt that LNOE truly captured the zombie feel. Or at least as much as a board game can capture the feeling of terror/running for your life…

        • Quirkworthy says:

I haven’t played LNOE myself, though I know some fans.

        • McHolty says:

I’m surprised that you haven’t played it. The game has excellent minis (no where near mantic quality of course 🙂 ), the cards are made of good material so they don’t bend easily, plus it is a modular board to mix up the layout. There are bunches of different scenarios (especially if you pick up a few of the expansions) that use all sorts of different items which add dynamics to the game.

I highly recommend it to anyone that likes zombies/board games. It’s the only game that my friends and I are playing right now. We have grown tired of the military games (Risk, Axis&Allies, etc). The games where you only control a few models instead of an entire army is a great diversion. Which is why we are all really looking forward to Deadzone 🙂

        • Quirkworthy says:

Actually I might have played it. I honestly can’t remember. My mate has told me about it several times and we were going to play. I just can’t remember whether we ever did. Clearly didn’t make much of an impression if I did though…

…actually, having gone over to BGG to look at the pictures, I realise that yes I have played it. Some clever bits, though not something I rushed out to buy.

        • McHolty says:

After playing it at a friend’s house…I rushed out to buy it :-p

If you disliked LNOE that much…I have nothing to say to you, lol.

        • Quirkworthy says:

I didn’t think LNOE was awful, I just didn’t think it was anything very special. It’s an OK game and I’d play it again with the right group, but I’m not rushing to do so. That’s just my opinion, and there are plenty of others who think it’s grand. I think there’s plenty of room for improvement.

As I always say, BGG lists 60,000+ games so there’s room for everyone to find something they like.

        • McHolty says:

I will def admit that it isn’t perfect. But there isn’t much that I would change. I think as a whole it is a well thought out game. Maybe you just need to play it with my group of friends? 🙂

          Different strokes for different folks.

        • Quirkworthy says:

This is the beauty of there being so much choice in the world of gaming.

It seemed well enough put together, it just didn’t really stand out overall for me. A solid average, maybe a bit above. Nothing exceptional. I felt that it ticked all the obvious boxes (nothing wrong with that), but only did so mechanically, not with any real heart. But like I said, YMMV, and that’s a good thing.

But all those dudes were dead

    You want music, too? 🙂

Thought you were making a DeadZone: Sopranos game for a moment there. What with your title. That’d be a laugh… Modern suburban mafia spin on the Mantic universe creatures.
