Promised Photos

Well I’ve got some better pics today. Not the best, but certainly an improvement and good enough to show off my average painting. We’ll start with some old paint jobs to illustrate that I was OK at one time. Never award winning by any stretch, but adequate. These first two are both Citadel models.

The furry chap on the left is a very old Skaven linerat from my Blood Bowl team. He’s a little scuffed round the ears from being used a lot (and, being Skaven, being knocked down a lot). The angry fellow on the right was my take on the White Dwarf that I painted for an article in that magazine when I was Editor. We all did, as I recall. He’s a Slayer with a different paint job, including a pink and flushed face (he does look cross). His base was a slottabase that I chopped about a bit so that it could be a slab of dungeon floor. At least, in my head it was ;P

The next two are historical models, both from Foundry and both sculpted by the Perry twins, I believe.

The one on the left is an American Civil War foot soldier of no particular unit. On the right we have a Peninsular War Napoleonic British line infantryman from a centre company of the Nottinghamshire Regiment (green facings, you see). Neither of the bases are finished, for some reason.

So that’s how I used to paint. As I said yesterday, I’ve found a mixed bag of victims to test out whether I still can. Step up, lads…

Left top right, we have a Foundry WWI German infantryman, another Foundry model, this time a young lad carrying a bucket (part of an artillery crew), and a Citadel Cadian Shock Trooper from the Imperial Guard. The lad needs a different base and I spotted a mould line I’d missed, but apart from that they’re good to go. You can see the old base colour I used to use for skin on the boy. It’s also obvious from this that I like thin bases, which will be the subject of a different article.

The final one of my models to start with is a conversion of a Plague Marine. I was always rather pleased with the way he came out, though by the time I’d finished him I’d got bored with the game. If I ever went back to 40K it’s a Nurgle army that I’d probably do.

The body is a Plague Marine, the head is from a plastic Goliath from the old Necromunda set (I think), and the head he’s holding is an Escher, also from Necromunda. Needs a bit of a dust before I get to painting πŸ™‚

So What Am I Going to Paint?

My least favourite part of painting is cleaning up the models in the first place, but it has to be done. So that I can avoid using that as an excuse not to do it, and so that I don’t make a mess of something valuable, I’m going to start with a few models that I’d already cleaned up ages ago. I was going to show you a photo, and indeed I shall. However, my camera + skills are not up to taking a decent photo with what I have in the dark. I need the great daylight bulb in the sky to get a halfway decent shot. Photos will have to wait till tomorrow.

The models I have dredged up are a mixed bag, as you might expect. That’s not the point. They are a means to an end.

I’ll also show you a couple of my old models so you can see that I used to be an OK painter. I never was fast though, and that’s something I need to fix.

Greetings!

Well that crystal ball gazing got a bit of attention πŸ™‚

Hello and welcome to all who joined us from TTGN. Seems that my predictions caused a bit of a spike in traffic. Perhaps I should take up fortune telling?

Please come in and make yourselves at home. Feel free to wander around, ask questions and comment on the decor. It’s something of a work in progress, so you may find unfinished pages, but do not be alarmed. Things are developing at a pretty pace and if you check back often you’ll find extra pages and all manner of additions crop up regularly. Alternatively, you could subscribe with the button on the right and the marvels of modern technology will mail you exciting stuff as it happens. At least, I think that’s what it does πŸ™‚

Load of (Crystal) Balls

If you mosey on over to the tab about my games (above), you’ll find a new page about the future plans for Dwarf King’s Hold. Here, if you can’t find it.

There’s a big, fat caveat about this being subject to change and the whimsy of Fate (and Ronnie), but it’s something to ponder and comment on. I’ll update it if things do change, so it’ll stay the place to find the current version of the crystal ball gazing.

A Little Confession

It has been a long time since I painted any toy soldiers properly. A very long time. So long, in fact, that I have entirely lost track of when I last did it. This is a bad thing.

This may seem peculiar for a game designer who works with miniatures on a daily basis, but that’s also a major part of the reason. Armies/warbands/gangs/etc of miniatures are a stock in trade for me. Some of the time I’m working on video games and other times board games, but a sizable portion of my work is with tabletop games. Without exception, these need me to work with several armies at once, without being partisan about their relative merits and skipping from one to the other and back before I have any chance of painting a whole force. If I collect one army out of half a dozen then it’s harder to be impartial when I balance the game. Couple this with the inevitable fact that often the models aren’t made when I am writing the game or army list that goes with them, and the fact that I’m a very slow painter and you can start to see the problem. However, I’ve decided that this isn’t acceptable.

I do own more than half a dozen painted armies for Warhammer, a bunch of gangs for various skirmish games and so on. However, the ones I painted myself long since ended up on Ebay, and what I have left are playtest armies acquired ready painted from various disparate sources. These armies stand in for whatever I’m working on, and do me good service, though none of them feel like “my army”. They’re just tools for the job.

When your hobby is also your work it gets easily muddled, and so this is really me attempting to regain some of my hobby and to separate the two a little more. It’d be nice to have an army of my own again πŸ™‚

So, with all this in mind, I’m setting out to clear my painting desk again. I’m going to relearn my old skills and add some new ones. And, while I’m about it, I’m going to document it here.

My first step is illustrated above; I now have some Hull Red. Now I can paint anything πŸ™‚

DKH Future Plans

I’m not going to spill any beans in detail yet as we’re still ironing out details, but the good news is that Ronnie and I had a chat about where we’d like to go with DKH and it’s all looking pretty exciting. More great stuff on the way πŸ™‚

I’m also finishing the FAQ. It’s taken a little longer than I expected as I’m trawling about the net reading all the comments and forums posts I can find to ensure that I’ve got all the issues covered. The last cluster is on BGG and I’m hoping to get all that done over the weekend and the FAQ posted shortly after that.

We’ve also seen the first fan scenarios and rules mods for Dwarf King’s Hold this week, so exciting times!

A Life on the Ocean Wave

Played my first game of Dystopian Wars last night, obliterating a British starter fleet for the loss of only a few Japanese frigates. It was an entertaining enough game, and one I’ll add to my list of things to review when I’ve got it on the table for another game or three.

I am getting increasingly wily in my old age though, and managed to play the game before I bought nine fleets for it (which is what usually happens). So far I’ve just got the rulebook. I was trying to decide on a fleet, and wasn’t particularly liking the look of the whole of any of them. I’d sort of half-decided on the Japanese and was able to borrow some and use them last night to see how they fared on the tabletop (thanks Paul!). They seem to suit me well enough, and looking at the stats with a fresh and improved understanding I think they are as good as any for my style of play. The American fleet looks pretty good on paper too, but I’m not so keen on their models, so I think the Japanese will do nicely.

It’s funny how much harder it was (and always is) to read the rules when I had to come at them cold than it was once I’d got a vague idea. One play was enough to give me a grasp of the basics and then I could just fill in the blanks and hone the details. When I worked for the Driving Standards Agency (who administer the UK driving test) they were very against people learning with their friends or parents, and then refining this with a proper instructor. Why then does this process work so much better as a mechanism for learning games? Is it just because picking up someone’s bad habits isn’t (usually) life-threatening on the tabletop?

DKH sells out again!

Dwarf King’s Hold: Dead Rising came back into print yesterday, and by the afternoon they were sold out again!

I think they printed more of the new Green Menace, but I don’t know how long they’ll last.

DKH on BGG is Go!

Acronyms anyone?

After a small hiccup or two, Green Menace has now got its own page on Boardgamegeek: DKH: Green Menace, to go with the DKH: Dead Rising page.

If you’ve got any reviews, comments, or just want to go and rate my games that would help other folk understand how they work and whether or not they would suit them. In case you don’t know, Boardgamegeek (BGG to its friends) is an amazingly useful resource, but relies on user driven content to work.

Infinity: Choosing an Allegiance

Having decided to go back to Infinity again, I’m confronted with the question of who to collect. Those that know me will understand that this probably does not mean one faction, but several; but even so, which ones?

I find Infinity a very unfriendly game to get into, and an awful rulebook to try and navigate. Having played it before, and having a general idea of the game, I still find it extremely difficult to decipher the army lists with either ease or speed. Constant cross referencing is required between many pages of two books to get an idea of what the army listing means on the tabletop. Gripes aside, who was in my shortlist, and why?

The top 3 + 1, in order of preference, are:

1) Morat Aggression Force: I always liked the Morat models and very little else of the Combined army. Now that I can use them on their own, that seemed like a winner. I’m also amused by the Rasyat’s idea of diplomacy. On the table it seems like they should be a fairly balanced force, though naturally I will do my best to abuse this πŸ™‚

2) Neoterran Capitaline Army: the first army I had the first time round was a PanO force, and this was the one that I broke the game with then. It all went on Ebay, but now I’ll probably recreate it. Shooty, lots of tech and a different TAG for every day of the week (at least in vanilla PanO list).

3) Japanese Sectorial Army: I like the Keisotsu Butai lots. And the Karakuri. I’m far less convinced by their battlefield stance, but I really like some of the models.

+1) ALEPH: a small, elite force and nice models ticks several boxes for me. However, I feel that it’s not the force to start with. I need to understand the rules more deeply to really make the most out of ALEPH, so I’ll come back to them later.

Ironically, because of Infinity’s peculiar release schedule I’ve started with my third choice (JSA). With no sectorial starter packs for either 1 or 2 I’d end up with a bunch of models I didn’t want if I got the ones I did. Plus, some core models are likely candidates for resculpts, and at least one core model (Raicho) is still unreleased after 5 years. 5 years! That’s almost as ridiculous as releasing a skirmish game that emphasises defence and then not releasing your scenario book for 5 years. Hang on a minute…
